About
Our Story of Impact
Raising Star Africa Foundation is a Non-governmental organization founded in 2020 by Michael Showunmi. Michael is a person with disability and comes from a less-privileged background in Lagos Nigeria. Growing up as a child with a physical disability was difficult for him as he was not able to attend nursery school because there was no care made for disabilities in most schools. Michael was carried by his friends to and fro to school for over two years of his primary education.
Coming from a society that is hostile to differently-abled children, coupled with the societal stigma. Michael knows what it means to be deprived of education as he was a victim of bullying, hurtful teasing; threat and abuse making him miss school for days and weeks. This experience ignited and fueled his passion to inspire an inclusive African society where every differently-abled and less privileged child has a voice and equal opportunity, catering to the needs of every differently-able and less privileged child. Since its inception, the Raising Stars Africa Foundation has reached over 15,000 children in different communities across different states in Nigeria.
